A Day of Thanks
Short Story by Kathy (motherbee)
Submitted by motherbee "The Harvest Dress"
Today is thanksgiving. It is 4:00 am and Poppa was already getting up.
"Where are you going and why are you getting dressed?", I asked. "I heard the Haines family, not but a half days ride from here, is having it hard this winter." said Poppa. "Why haven't you told me?" ask Momma Primdear. "Because momma you always worry when I leave till I return home." said Poppa. "Well, I will get up with you and cook eggs and coffee. Its way to cold to leave with out something to tide you over and keep you warm inside." said Momma.
We sat at the table while Poppa Primdear finished. I said, "If you are going, then I will pack a basket of food, so this day will be blessed for them" But Poppa already knew once I was up I would make sure he would not leave empty handed.
I am Kathy, also known as Motherbee. I am going to be writing a short story each month for APP.
I hope you enjoy November's story entitled, "A Day of Thanks".
Here is a little about myself...
Kathleen Ortman Trout was born in Lancaster County, PA, the oldest of 6 children. I have been married to the same wonderful man for 40 years this coming December 8th. We relocated to Knoxville, PA almost 11 years ago because I love the mountains.
I have been raising 3 grandchildren for the last 11 years with our son and 2 more grandchildren for the last 4 years due to our daughter's passing. Yes, ladies at the age of 58, I am a mother to 5 grand children...9 people live in my home!
My love of crafting keeps me young.
I have a wonderful supportive family and I love my life!
My love for every thing old came from being a farmer's daughter. I always knew what hard work was and to this day, I know hard work.
Even though I lost my daughter, I have found many along the way...that is why I am called mother.
One of them that I have found along the way is Kristine. She was the very first one to call me mother. I have never met her in person and we don't always see eye to eye, but we have a bond of love between us! ; )
Thanks for reading and hope you enjoy my story!
A Day of Thanks
Short Story by Kathy (motherbee)
While I put the meal the girls and I have prepared on the table, I knew there was another meal of thanks a half days ride away. After all, its Thanksgiving and we should all be thankful for how little or how much we have.
We held hands as we prayed, knowing we made a small difference, in a small but loving way, to a family called Haines.
"Happy Thanksgiving, children and Happy Thanksgiving, Poppa Primdear," said Momma.
"And Happy Thanksgiving to you momma primdear," Poppa answered.
From Poppa and Momma Primdear to all of your families, have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving!

"The girls and I will bake more and when you return we will have are meal of thanks!" said Momma.
Poppa said, "Let the boys hunt to day, but tell them not to go far!" "I will,"
I said, "and you say I worry!"
I turned to the girls, "Ok sweet ones, today we give thanks and since we have time, we will bake bread, cakes and prepare the meal."
"Katie, you get the bowls. Amanda you get all the spoons and rolling pins. Miranda get out the flour, sugar and yeast and we will start our day. "Yes, Momma, we are ready to help, they all said. "Yes, I know, but remember...flour in the bowls....not all over yourselves!" laughed Momma.
We worked all day baking.

I places onions, taters, apples, a few canned fruits, a ham that was done begin smoked, bread and a pantry cake in the basket for the children.
Poppa just looked at me and said, "Bread and cake? I thought you made them for our meal of thanks today?"
So when the children were up, washed and fed, I told the boys they could go hunt but not far, Poppa said. They were already running out the door as I said to dress warm and not too long!

The boys are back! Though they saw a deer, he wont be meat on our table. They where fighting as boys do on who would take the first shot, and the deer ran away!
"Ok boys, clean up and sit by the fire to warm up and read your lessons for now. We are waiting for Poppa's return, then we will have our meal of thanks," said Momma.

It is getting dark and late. Where can he be? thought Momma. He should of left the family Haines by this time!
"Amanda dear, would you please light the candles? I want Poppa to see every thing is ready when he returns. Come girls, lets set the table. The meal is almost done." said Momma.

I went outside and looked around...Poppa is no where in sight. It is so cold...Where can he be?

Soon I heard the wagon coming down the road. Poppa came through the door, safe but cold. "Here dear Poppa, warm your self" said Momma. "Mrs Haines was very happy that we thought of her and her family. She went through the basket and said all will be used today...for their day of thanks." said Poppa. Poppa said that he could see her waving as he drove away.

And remember, as we all have our day of thanks, there are many food pantries all over the this great country serving "a day of thanks" to someone who has a lot less then we do!
