A Brisk Day in January
Short Story by Kathy (motherbee)
Submitted by motherbee "A Brisk Day in January"
It's so cold today and breakfast is on the table.
As Poppa ate, I thought it would be a good time to ask. "Well Poppa," said momma primdear, "What do you have in store for the children and I with the new year?"
I ironed his shirts and the girls did the laundry and we waited for an answer.
"Hmm, that's a tough question you are asking momma," he answered, "since Amanda and Miranda are both of courting age I am not sure." The oldest girls both looked at poppa. What was he talking about, they wondered? They were not ready to be courted and leave home and dear momma, no not ready at all!
I am Kathy, also known as Motherbee. I am going to be writing a short story each month for APP.
I hope you enjoy January's story entitled, "A Brisk Day in January".
Here is a little about myself...
Kathleen Ortman Trout was born in Lancaster County, PA, the oldest of 6 children. I have been married to the same wonderful man for 40 years this coming December 8th. We relocated to Knoxville, PA almost 11 years ago because I love the mountains.
I have been raising 3 grandchildren for the last 11 years with our son and 2 more grandchildren for the last 4 years due to our daughter's passing. Yes, ladies at the age of 58, I am a mother to 5 grand children...9 people live in my home!
My love of crafting keeps me young.
I have a wonderful supportive family and I love my life!
My love for every thing old came from being a farmer's daughter. I always knew what hard work was and to this day, I know hard work.
Even though I lost my daughter, I have found many along the way...that is why I am called mother.
One of them that I have found along the way is Kristine. She was the very first one to call me mother. I have never met her in person and we don't always see eye to eye, but we have a bond of love between us! ; )
Thanks for reading and hope you enjoy my story!
A Brisk Day in January
Short Story by Kathy (motherbee)
"Yes, I was waiting to talk to you after the holidays because I know how busy you were, but poppa could not wait any longer so he decided to say something first. So that is why Ian has been around so much." said Miranda.
Momma laughed, "And I though it was my cooking!" But momma had noticed the two of them sneaking peeks at each other from time to time.
Katie sat on the settle cuddled in a quilt mending a few things, though I knew she was wondering what we where talking about.
Poppa said, "I must cut wood and feed the horses, cattle and make room in the barn for the new goats. So out the door he went.
The girls looked at me with questioning eyes. "Not to worry," momma said, "poppa is just talking.
"Well I won't!" said Amanda.
"It's ok," said Miranda, "I have a suitor and poppa said we have enough land that Ian and I could have an acre for a cabin."
"So you've been talking to poppa?!" momma asked.
All the work was done and the children are getting ready for bed, so I ask poppa, "Are you sure Ian is the right one for Miranda?"
"Yes he is." poppa said "He and I have talked about this for a while now and he loves our daughter. I have offered him land for a house but he wants to pay it, so I have agreed. They will make a fine couple, so be happy momma."
"I am happy poppa, I am happy," said momma primdear. Though she was happy her heart was heavy knowing her oldest child would soon wed. momma has never though about this though she knew this day would come but yet grateful her sweet Miranda would be a short walk from her door.
Poppa said, "Momma lets go to bed early, tomorrow we have to go to the Styles farm to pick up your goats then we will see about that spinning wheel you want."
"Ok girls back to the laundry, so we can finish, there is other work to be done." said momma. As I am thinking to myself how grown my daughters have become and how I wish they where still little ones tugging at my dress.
"You go I will be there in a minute," momma said. She sat on the floor and as she turned the pages of her Bible and read by candle light, she thought to herself what will tomorrow bring?
Amanda said, "Momma I am not ready to leave you. I looked at her and said, "Sweet one, you will know when you are ready and poppa would never make you marry any one." She turned to me and smiled.
